erm, the above return by reference still has a parser error (Using PHP 4.01 Win32 compiler)

i.e. this causes an error

function &returns_reference() {

    return &$someref;

}

$newref = &returns_reference();

To fix this and still keep the returning by reference thingy .... it should read as follows

function &returns_reference() {

    return $someref;

}

$newref = &returns_reference();

Could someone in the great world of amazingness that is the realm of the PHP gods confirm this?
