| XFree86 4.0.2 Released! (#84) |
| by Robert Easter on Wed @03:49 AM, Dec 20, 2000 EST(Unscored)(Replies: 0/0)(Topic > Home > Software > X) |
| XFree86.org has released XFree86 4.0.2. This has been a highly anticipated release as it adds support for popular graphics cards like the ATi Raedon and NVIDIA GeForce2 which for the past few months have only been supported in cvs snapshots.
Enhancements to the 4.0 base release. Darwin/Mac OS X is now supported and the X server runs on PowerPC. Mesa updated to the latest stable (3.4) release. Increased ATI support including: ATI Radeon driver adapter support added; Multi-head configuration support added; Non-Intel platform support improved. A driver (i128) for Number Nine chipsets has been added. A driver (savage) for S3 Savage chipsets has been added. A driver (siliconmotion) for some Silicon Motion chipsets has been added. The driver (ark) for Ark Logic chips has been ported to 4.x. A VESA driver has been added. Support has been added for Linux/mips platform on some SGI hardware.. Improved DRI support for the ATI, 3Dfx, Intel, Matrox, SiS and Sun chips. The DRI is now also available on Alpha platforms Xinerama big endian problems have been fixed. Render support has been added. This extension to the X protocol, uniquely XFree86's allows image composition and anti-aliasing text. Significant enhancements to the Internationalisation support in Xlib New XKB keyboard definitions have been added and updated for some countries. New xfs updates, including font path verification, and options. XTerm enhancements. The Render extension addition may be quite an advance for visual quality! Hardware accelerated anti-aliasing, commonly referred to as "AA", of text, icons, and other graphics, is part of what gives MS Windows its refined look. Wide spread use of the X Render extension in KDE (and other X desktops) should help a lot to make X more appealing. |
| DARPA to make exoskeletons for soldiers. (#83) |

| I read about this on some other sites too. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the agency that helped make the original Internet, is seeking research proposals to make exoskeletons for soldiers so that they can carry more weapons, run faster, jump higher, fly, have more strength etc. The DARPA announcement is here. Crazy!

| 3dfx initiatives: sell its assets to NVIDIA (#81) |
| by Robert Easter on Sat @01:35 AM, Dec 16, 2000 EST(Unscored)(Replies: 0/0)(Topic > Home > Technology) |
| In a 3dfx press release, here, 3dfx plans to sell most of its assets to NVIDIA pending shareholder approval.
NVIDIA is the technology leader in PC graphics cards in the OEM market. 3dfx has been a leader in the PC graphics cards retail market. The joining of NVIDIA and 3dfx is hoped to increase efficiency (profit) and advance technological development by building on the strengths of both companies. With 3dfx assets, including its patents and pending patents, NVIDIA would gain additional leadership in the market making life more difficult for S3/Diamond/SonicBlue and Ati, and whoever else is left in the video card market. |
| Qt 2.2.3 released at trolltech.com (#80) |
| by Robert Easter on Thu @09:53 PM, Dec 14, 2000 EST(Unscored)(Replies: 0/0)(Topic > Home > Software > Hackers) |
| Qt 2.2.3, a bugfix release (+ more language translations and docs), has been released. KDE 2 requires at least Qt 2.2.1, but recommends 2.2.2. 2.2.3 is fully compatible, both forward and backward with Qt 2.2.2 so it should be recommended now.
http://www.trolltech.com/ Qt is a graphical user interface (GUI) C++ programming library for both Windows and X11. Qt is the foundation on which the K Desktop Environment is built. |
| Jakarta Tomcat 3.2.1 (security fix) Release. (#79) |
| by Robert Easter on Thu @02:18 PM, Dec 14, 2000 EST(Unscored)(Replies: 0/0)(Topic > Home > Software > Hackers) |
| Tomcat is a servlet container that works with Apache, supporting java servlets and java server pages (.jsp).
=============================================================================== 7. SECURITY VULNERABILITIES FIXED IN TOMCAT 3.2.1 7.1 Protection of Resources in /WEB-INF and /META-INF Directories The servlet specification prohibits servlet containers from serving resources in the /WEB-INF and /META-INF directories of a web application archive directly to clients. In Tomcat 3.2, this means that URLs like: http://localhost:8080/examples/WEB-INF/web.xml will return an error message, rather than the contents of your deployment descriptor. However, there is a vulnerability in Tomcat 3.2 that exposes this information if the client requests a URL like this instead: http://localhost:8080/examples//WEB-INF/web.xml (note the double slash before "WEB-INF"). This vulnerability has been corrected in Tomcat 3.2.1. 7.2 Show Source Vulnerability The example application delivered with Tomcat 3.2 included a mechanism to display the source code for the JSP page examples. This mechanism could be used to bypass the restrictions on displaying sensitive information in the WEB-INF and META-INF directories. This vulnerability has been removed. |

| Kool Desktop Environment (KDE) 2.0.1 has been released at http://www.kde.org/.
This new version fixes many annoying bugs in the initial KDE 2.0 release. This release should be fairly solid now. Those waiting for a bugfix release before upgrading from 1.1.2 should be pleased! For more info about this release, go to the KDE 2.0.1 Info Page. |
| 45 byte program! (#72) |
| by Robert Easter on Sun @05:32 AM, Dec 03, 2000 EST(Score: 1)(Replies: 0/0)(Topic > Home > Software > Hackers) |
| There is an interesting article here about how to make an ELF Linux program that is only 45 bytes!
I tried compiling it on my computer running nasm 0.98 and Linux kernel 2.2.17 and it would not run: "cannot execute binary file" It's interesting anyway and it might run with an older kernel. Even if it won't run with your kernel, the article is fun reading to understand the ELF format! Its amazing what this guy did to shrink the program. |
