Hello again,
I would like to propose a new PECL package which provides Double
Metaphone Capability.
For those who are not aware of what this is, it allows a word to be
broken down into phonemes. The Double Metaphone is an amelioration of
the Metaphone algorithm which gives better results with languages
other than English. We use it here to process French and it gives
better results than the original Metaphone (which is already present
in PHP core, thanks to Thies).
If you look in comments from the Metaphone function of the Manual, you
can see an implementation in PHP of the Double Metaphone algo. While
this can work, it is really slow. This is what motivated us to move it
at the C level.
The package uses the C library written by Maurice Aubrey, available at
CPAN. It is available under the Artistic License, which to my
understanding is compatible with PHP.
As for the name, I do not know if it should be "doublemetaphone" or
"double_metaphone". It would be filled under category Text.
Sincerely,
Olivier
