As a request to provide PHP for two different clients with different needs where one wants mssql support and the other wants sybase support and I just noticed that both of these extensions use the same libraries, are they effectively the same extension or is there more going on than meets the eye?
well, #1 Microsoft does not provide any Unix client software for their SQL server #2 MS SQL Server originally was just a rebranded Sybase server It has evolved by now, going its own ways, but it still speaks the sybase protocol for backwards compatibility reasons. So the FreeTDS library works for both Microsoft and Sybase SQL Server products. As far as i remember the Sybase extension doesn't care whether it is linked against native Sybase libraries or FreeTDS. The MSSQL extension on the other hand requires the original Microsoft client libraries when building on windows, only when building on Unix it will rely on FreeTDS instead. There may be more issues with building both, e.g. the Sybase extension doing alias entries to ext/mssql function names ... I haven't touched any of the two ever since 1999 or 2000 or so, so i don't remember any more details or how things might have changed since then ... -- Hartmut Holzgraefe, Principal Support Engineer .
