In the meantime I've written new extension, a wrapper around LZF compression
library. You can download it from here: http://www.iceni.pl/lzf-1.0.tgz

There are two functions:
lzf_compress(string data)
lzo_decompress(string data)
The extension contains copy of lzf library (which is under BSD-type licence).
I tested it on linux/php-4.3.3.
