This bug has been fixed in CVS.

Snapshots of the sources are packaged every three hours; this change
will be in the next snapshot. You can grab the snapshot at
http://snaps.php.net/.

When I use libmysql.dll from the php snapshot, I get the connection
lost error. When I use libmysql.dll from my mysql installation, I get
the unbuffered query error.

I'm also seeing this error now:

SQLSTATE[HY000]: General error: 2013 Lost connection to MySQL server
during query

I'll be idling on ##php on irc.freenode.net as 'weller', it would be
good to talk/debug directly. This is really stopping me in my tracks so
I'd appreciate any help.

Well, I tried with the latest snapshot and still no luck. What are
buffered queries anyway? I still think that nextRowset needs to be
implemented and this whole thing can go away.

The change is only about a day old, you need to download the 
latest win32 snapshot from http://snaps.php.net/
