this **was** a bug , current versions do the job correctly.
Do not issue bug reports against older PHP version. (current version is
5.2.0)

On FC3, PHP version is 4.3.11
On FC6, PHP version is 5.1.6
$s=""; // debug
if (!(ctype_alnum($s))) echo "false<br>"; // return value is not
same on FC3 and FC6
