Before processing GD library converts all the images into its internal
format, which takes a lot more than jpeg.
The error message is expected, increase the memory_limit if you really
need to process 300k JPEG images.

Image is 300k big and when I try to load it with imagecreatefromjpeg
fails with Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted
....
