i did try this in 4.2.1 release today. Is not work too.
Server reply:
CGI Timeout
The specified CGI application exceeded the allowed time for processing.
The server has deleted the process.

curl_setopt ($ch, CURLOPT_MUTE, 1);
$result = curl_exec ($ch);
curl_close ($ch);
it's worked in PHP v4.0.6, 4.1.2 but not work in v4.2.0
No error messages output. Simple hangs up.
Php installed from win32-binnary package
