New Comment:
This bug has been fixed in CVS. You can grab a snapshot of the
CVS version at http://snaps.php.net/. In case this was a
documentation
problem, the fix will show up soon at http://www.php.net/manual/.
In case this was a PHP.net website problem, the change will show
up on the PHP.net site and on the mirror sites.
Thank you for the report, and for helping us make PHP better.

When gcc is installed on Solaris 8 and there is no symlink from the gcc
executable to cc, compilation of PHP 4.2.1 fails because of apparently
missing header files. When this symlink is present compilation
succeeds.
Apparently, when looking in config.log, the test part of the configure
fails when cc is not present because cc is needed for compiling the
test script written in C. (For example testing for the presence of
unix.h). The basic error consists of the fact that if the test fails
the header file is assumed to be present and of course the hard
reference to CC instead of ${CC}.
Hope this can be fixed in a new version.
Thx, Erick
