On my AIX 4.3.3 i have resolved the "invalid suffix" problem:
Modify ./libtool at line 49 and change "build_old_libs=no" to
"build_old_libs=yes", then execute "make"...
Bye

Have you tried the fix suggested here yet?
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=php-install&m=104327038604878&w=2
I don't have access AIX so I have no idea if it works, but
it's worth a shot...

OK,
I made the modifications indicated, the only errors that remains is the
error about .lo being an unrecognized file extension - looked in libtool
but not sure where I make the change to accept the .lo extension. Need a
little more guidance and the "make" should succeed.
I would greatly appreciate a prompt response.
