fine again.

This was an upstream bug, see https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=518904
.

I've the same problem with PHP 5.5.* running on Gentoo. I can't find any bug report on
bugs.gentoo.org. Is the Gentoo package maintainer aware of this problem or is there a bug report
somewhere?

Can be closed. Works on Upstream. This is an issue with the current ebuilds, so I'm sending
this to bugs.gentoo.org.
Thanks anyways people :)

I just ran into the same thing (on funtoo, which is based on gentoo builds). I can even reproduce
on the command line...
bender(sandiego) [html]$ /usr/lib64/php5.5/bin/php index.php | head
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
[snip the rest of the html]
But run the cgi binary:
ender(sandiego) [html]$ /usr/lib64/php5.5/bin/php-cgi index.php | head
PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '<<<EndMessage' in /[snip path to
file].php on line 309
X-Powered-By: PHP/5.5.15-pl0-gentoo
Content-type: text/html
They were built together. Previously 5.5.14 worked, removing 5.5.15 and rebuilding 5.1.14 and it
didn't fix it. I'm looking at exact output from the build process to see if there was an
odd flag passed to ./configure but looking at the binaries, they both refer to HEREDOC so I
don't think it was disabled. Back-rev'd to 3.4.31 for now to get site working again.
Looks like it could likely be gentoo related since we're both on gentoo.

5.4.31 is the last version which is working for me, everything above 5.5.0 failed in my case. sadly.
