After some careful investigation into this scenario, I found a
workaround.
In php_reentrancy.h, above the #if defined(HAVE_IRIX_TIME_R) call,
add:
#if (SOLARIS2 - 0 >= 280)
#define HAVE_POSIX_READDIR_R 1
#undef HAVE_ASCTIME
#undef HAVE_CTIME
#undef HAVE_ASCTIME_R
#undef HAVE_CTIME_R
#undef PHP_IRIX_TIME_R
#endif
This is only tested on Solaris 8. I think the main problem is that
while Solaris 8 has support for POSIX reentrant functions (when
_POSIX_PTHREAD_SEMANTICS is set...) it's not being picked up on during
the configuration phase.
Some testing will likely need to be made for Solaris 2.6/7/9.

Can you please try a recent snapshot from the development branch (aka
non-STABLE)? I believe there have been a number of fixes for Solaris
placed in there, and that this might have been one of them.

playing with my LD_LIBRARY_PATH:
/usr/lib:/opt/sfw/lib:/usr/local/lib:/usr/local/mysql/lib:/usr/ccs/lib
Problem still the same.
gcc -v
Reading specs from
/opt/sfw/lib/gcc-lib/sparc-sun-solaris2.8/2.95.3/specs
gcc version 2.95.3 20010315 (release)
