No, IIRC (and it was 9 years ago) it was just a nice error complaining about passing in fds higher
than 1024/FD_SETSIZE. I'm somewhat certain it didn't actually crash, but just returned an
error.

In my opinion, it would be better to fix the crashing
socket_select(). So please specify the details of the crash. Is it
the same behavior as reported in bug #72030?
