Just hit the same snatch.
Had to go with date('last day of December '.date('Y'))
Will love to have this in the feature.

you can use "last day of december" :D

Ah, I see it. "last day of" is only implemented for "month", not
"year". Obviously, the first and last days of a year are always going to be the same: Jan
1st, and Dec 31st. I'm leaving this as a Feature Request.
