Does this have anything to do with the implementation of the methods themselves or the adoption of
SOAPClient and SOAPServer?

When using SOAPClient and SOAPServer with the classmap option, ext/soap should invoke  __sleep() and
__wakeUp() methods (if defined) when creating objects from SOAP data or turning objects into SOAP
data.
