PHP tracks memory usage, thus if memory_limit is set, it will limit memory usage correctly and no
system OOM will occur (if there is enought memory for the set limit of course)

with the statement above, I belive we can do that with zero performance impact, eg. if PHP is OOM,
check if the stack trace is above some treshold and convert that error to recursion limit reached
error ;-)
