[php-src] Issue #13172: Run a script on a .php file before it is interpreted?

I've scoured the php.net manual, runtime options, and internet and cannot find a way to run a script on code before it is passed to the interpreter without creating intermediate files. Was hoping to maybe get some tips from developers more familiar with the core on how to do this. Thanks.
