Bug description:  mail function will not send a email larger than 4k

I am using PHP on a free bsd unix box.  I have a few scripts that take
inputed user data, and submit it to the corresponding recipients.  I have
found that I can not send a email that contains html formatting over 4k. 
The email literally stops processing data in the middle of the mail.  It
will read until 4k and stop.  This has put a squeeze on what formatting I
can use.  Please help
