Use addcslashes() it allows you specify the list of characters that
should be escaped.

it would be VERY useful if the addslashes() function would take a
second parameter to specify that only one particular kind of quote is
to be escaped, instead of escaping both... sort of like
htmlentities()'s quote_style.
