Have rebuilt PHP (same source as I reported the bug from) and no longer
experience the problem. Thank you for your time and effort.

But I really think you're doing something wrong since

does not seem to work anymore. It did work previously with 4.2.3, log
files show php reporting it as an undefined function now. Online
documentation shows the function to be available in 4.3.0.
