This was submitted almost three years ago, is still open, and there are
no additional comments on this report? This particular issue is a
major one and needs urgent attention.

It would quite fine if zend would support this syntax...
function ref(&$var='') {}
To enable optional references. If no parameter is supplied,
set $var to standard value, as usual.
