Are you compiling PHP with ccache ?
If no, try make clean and then make again.
If yes, try without using ccache, it can generate bogus
files sometimes.

When I compile php with the option apxs2: ./configure
--prefix=/etc/httpd/php --with-apxs2=/etc/httpd/bin/apxs
--with-mysql=../mysql
I see the problem follow:
ext/ctype/ctype.lo: file not recognized: File truncated
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: ** [libphp4.la] Erro 1
