Please try using this CVS snapshot:

  http://snaps.php.net/php4-STABLE-latest.tar.gz

For Windows:

  http://snaps.php.net/win32/php4-win32-STABLE-latest.zip

I have verified that this problem exists in 4.3.0 too.
This is definitely a terrible bug (most likely with the threading
somewhere). And is being exposed repeatedly by many people. Hopefully
someone will look into this.
I had provided with a stack trace with php4.2.3 in my first post.

First of all please try PHP 4.3.0 or better yet the latest (stable)
snapshot. When you compile it, please use --enable-debug, as that would
produce more meaningful backtraces if the code cores.
