That's because you're supposed to use "!==", i.e.:
if ($result !== FALSE)
echo "ZERO";
else
echo "EMPTY";

if (!$result === FALSE)
echo "ZERO";
else
echo "EMPTY";
Expected result:
----------------
ZERO
Actual result:
--------------
EMPTY
