This problem has resurfaced in 4.3.4 (4.3.3 and earlier works fine)

Handling of NULL columns is fixed in php 4.0.6

mssql_fetch_array (and mssql_fetch_row) return a single space for
columns that contain an empty string (as opposed to columns that
contain NULL).
