I did some more tracing with GDB. I added a print_r call to the array
which gets corrupted when it first is created, and set a breakpoint on
zend.c:201, so I could set a breakpoint on the expr address of the
array and watch what happens to it.
As you can see from the value of *expr and the backtraces below, the
reference count goes from 3 to 2 to 3 to 2 to 3 to 2 to 1 to 0. Then
the memory is cleared and filled with 0x5a ('Z'), I am pretty sure this
happens because of the "memset(ptr, 0x5a, p->size);" in _efree
(zend_alloc.c:246) in this debug build of PHP. Notice that the last
break after filling memory is in a call to zend_hash_copy, and the
refcount is incremented from 23130 (ascii 'ZZ') to 23131 (ascii '[Z').
So obviously the deallocated zval is being "resurrected". After this no
more breakpoints occur until
PHP crashes while trying to allocate 1515870810 (ascii 'ZZZZ') bytes
inside the print_r implementation again.
It appears there is a bug somewhere in PHP which causes either too many
"reference--" or too few "reference++", since the deallocated variable
is still being used after first having dropped to 0 refs.
In addition to posting the gdb output, I'm also adding the contents of
apache's errorlog, which seems to indicate possible memory leaks (I'm
not sure if they are related). Any response would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

I've been having problems with ridiculous "out of memory" errors caused
by print_r trying to allocate about 1.5gb of memory while printing an
object where one of the object fields is an array of objects. It
appears the array is completely corrupted.
Unfortunately I'm not at liberty to provide the full source code of our
application, and I've been unable to reduce the reproducible crash down
to a simple test case - it only occurs when all mysql queries, session
handling etc. are left in place.
However, I've been playing around with gdb on a debug-build of today's
PHP4 snapshot. I set a breakpoint on "zend.c:201", which is the
beginning of "zend_print_zval_ex()". Each time this breakpoint is
reached, "*expr" contains the various strings which are fields of the
object in question. But just before PHP exits with an out-of-memory
error, the following is reached instead of printing the field which
contains an array of other objects:

If the print_r is changed to "echo gettype($object->theArrayField)",
"Unknown type" is produced. So it appears there is a case of memory
corruption where lots of 'ZZZZZZZ' is dumped where the array should
have been.
Do you have any ideas on tracking down this bug? Any suggestions on how
to work with gdb or whatever are appreciated.
I tried putting in a "watch 0x81af164" in gdb on startup, but that just
resulted in gdb taking 100% cpu for 3 minutes and then crashing in
libc's select().
We *did* find one workaround, but it's not really satisfactory since
it's "black magic". The method that assigns the array-of-objects to the
main object's field (i.e. the field that is corrupted) works like this:

When changed to:
function setTheField() {
include("path/to/a/file/containing/the/body/of/this/method.php");
}
the error does not occur. But according to the PHP manual, "return
include" is the correct way to return the include-file's return value
as the function's return value.
Also, I'm guessing the real error is still present, but doesn't trigger
because, by chance, some other memory location is corrupted instead.
