Every time I tried, I downloaded the latest stable CVS snapshot and
deleted the old dirs.

php5-200503220330 does not change anything about the error or the
effects.

You tried it with latest CVS snapshot? Fresh sources?
(delete config.cache always before reconfigure, and 'make clean' before
'make')
