I expect it to return "ACK", then return " " because of the '\n' and
break the while loop, which it doesn't. As far as I understand from the
manual it should.

ACK\n == 4 chars.

Note the trailing '\n' to the ACK response, also note it's a string(4).

Try 'var_dump($out);' before those 'if' clauses.
