Well, PHP, with a bit of tweaking, is far smaller than any other dynamic
scripting environment you can use for such small embedded web server
platforms. And yes, I am seriously saying that PHP is used on such
systems.

Yup, *web*. And web servers come in all shapes and sizes. Small NAS
boxes that come with an administrative *web* interface, routers and
gateways that come with a *web* interface, perhaps your next digital
camera will be web managed. The trend to remove the tweakability of PHP
by removing things such as --without-pcre and --with-regex=system makes it
less and less likely that PHP will be chosen as the web tool for such
devices.
