At first you are right but then documentation says: /This function is EXPERIMENTAL. The behaviour of this function, the name of this function, and anything else documented about this function may change in a future release of PHP without notice. Be warned and use this function at your own risk. /so i thought about an easy solution to check if for instance ob_gzhandler is active.
Since others may have better idea, I marked it as experimental function. Even if I don't have plan to change API, I usually mark new function as experimental function. It's also safe if we mark new function as experimental at first. That's all. If status of the function is the problem, new function is not needed, IMHO. -- Yasuo Ohgaki
