I guess it was too good to last. ;-) I don't have a Debian 2.2 system available, if you could manually add some diagnostics to config.status I would appreciate it. The suspected culprit is around line 1500 of config.status on my RH 6.1 box: if test "$CONFIG_FILES" = ""; then /bin/sh ./build/fastgen.sh . yes sapi/Makefile ext/Makefile Makefile pear/Makefile main/Makefile ext/db/Makefile ext/gd/Makefile ext/mcal/Makefile ext/mysql/Makefile ext/mysql/libmysql/Makefile ext/pcre/Makefile ext/pcre/pcrelib/Makefile ext/posix/Makefile ext/session/Makefile ext/standard/Makefile ext/xml/Makefile ext/xml/expat/Makefile ext/xml/expat/xmlparse/Makefile ext/xml/expat/xmltok/Makefile sapi/cgi/Makefile regex/Makefile else for file in sapi/Makefile ext/Makefile Makefile pear/Makefile main/Makefile ext/db/Makefile ext/gd/Makefile ext/mcal/Makefile ext/mysql/Makefile ext/mysql/libmysql/Makefile ext/pcre/Makefile ext/pcre/pcrelib/Makefile ext/posix/Makefile ext/session/Makefile ext/standard/Makefile ext/xml/Makefile ext/xml/expat/Makefile ext/xml/expat/xmlparse/Makefile ext/xml/expat/xmltok/Makefile sapi/cgi/Makefile regex/Makefile; do if test "$file" = "$CONFIG_FILES"; then /bin/sh ./build/fastgen.sh . yes $file fi done fi Does this section look the same on your box? Try echo'ing CONFIG_FILES before this test and see if that explains anything? - Stig
