Help with DB Connectivity

Hi, As a new project, from scratch, I am trying to get a Linux web server machine to integrate with my workplace's network to provide an Intranet facility for our department. To do this, I am also trying to provide database connectivity on these pages to our live databases. I am going to install Apache with PHP and I have been looking at ODBC for database access but am at the start of my investigations. I would like to connect from this Linux machine to Progress databases on VMS. Has anyone looked at what installations and configurations are required to get php to talk to these databases? Has anyone had to do this before? What is the best way/product to install for ODBC? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
