I have done some experimentation using a perl-DBI program with two of these databases ( Pgsql 7and Oracle 8 / 8.1 )... The test simulated an "online banking style" application with 3 tables ( 2 small with about 5000 rows and 1 large with about 10million rows ) and a configurable number of concurrent users ( I used 20,40,60,80,100,120 ) I used a 2xI686 350MHz + 1G RAM Server running Redhat 6.1 1 Pgsql is 50% slower than Oracle unless the option "nosfync" is enabled - then it is about the same 2 Oracle requires a larger memory footprint The version of Oracle makes a difference - 8.0.5 requires substantially less memory than 8.1.6, for instance I could run 120 concurrent users for 8.0.5, but only 50 using 8.1.6 ( without exhausting memory...) You can squeeze it down a bit by reducing the shared memory size - e.g : java_pool_size=0 ( if you're not using the java engine...) Pgsql had no problem with 120 users, and I could run about 200 without exhausting memory I could have tested many more users by running perl on a different box from the database ( more realistic too ), but for the purposes of comparison it was ok to use the same box for everything... For comparing Mysql and Pgsql, the "word on the street" is that Mysql is faster unless number of users is large... I could not compare them as I needed transactions enabled to run the test ( I did this before the transaction enabled version of Mysql came out)... P:s try downloading Oracle from mirror.aarnet.edu.au - as it appears close to you it is possible you might get decent transfer rate... !
