Your problem stems from not having MySQL actually up and running on your
localhost....or you're using a non-standard location for your mysql.sock
file. Check to make sure MySQL is running and the directories for MySQL
match.
MySQL would be setup with your PHP otherwise you wouldn't see that
error...you would instead see an unknown function error.
