MySQL super slow?

I just switched over to using a mysql database. the database is not large
and basically has no data in it. Does anybody know why every query that used
to be fast is crazy slow now? im developing locally so its not a slow
connection or anything. My only guess is that I can be connecting to the
database wrong. Can someone gimme a run down on the right way that should be
done? ( ie, when to use mysql_connect or pconnect) thanks.
