Problem with IBM DB2

DB2 V7.1 / PHP4.0.6 / RH Linux 7.1 / Apache 1.3.20. --with-db2
I'm having problems in the environment above , where the php connection
seems very unstable. about 50% of the time i get connection errors for no
apparent reason. If I refresh the page, the connection works ok. I may also
be getting a "resource error" in db2, but i'm not sure. Could be Kernel? or
DB2 configuration?
Excuse the vagueness of the message, but i'm an absolute beginner on DB2,
and have no idea where to start looking.
