"with" oci8 or oracle

Hiya,
What are the considerations when deciding whether to use the oci8 php functions or the oracle ones?
I'm currently using oracle8.1.5 on redhat6.1, and phplib7.2c along with its db_oracle.inc. Wondering if there are good reasons to switch to oci8.
