Handy tool on all unix variants called 'words'. It is in various places (do a whereis or a find), but in many modern releases of BSD, Solaris and Linux, it tends to be in /usr/dict/words or something along those lines. Generally, words is a tad shrunk down to only be the common words. Might also be words.huge or words.big in that folder which each takes different amounts. Generally you don't want too many words, so just choose 'word'. Find the number of lines in the file, seek down to that line and read the word... Maybe combine two words or something. That's the best way to do it because someones password would be 'catphone' and you can add a number or something onto it. Alternately, just generate random text (choose from 26 characters + 10 numbers) of however many (8) characters in length you want. But those are annoying as you receive a password which makes little sense. Hope this pushes you in the right direction; -- Mike ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rick Emery" <remery@excel.com> To: "'Larry Linthicum'" <larry@kimshew.com>; <php-db@lists.php.net> Sent: Tuesday, October 16, 2001 5:39 PM Subject: RE: [PHP-DB] generating "assigned" usernames and passwords > Let the users generate their own username and password.
