passing a variable

Hi,
I tried out to pass a variable through a form with a submit button to
another file and it's not working
echo "<form method=POST action=choix.php>
...
echo "Last Name: <Input TYPE=Text Name=\lname\ > <BR>";
<!-- choix.php -->
echo $lname;
$h = "hello";
it displays hello but not the the varible form the form ! What do I do
wrong?
