Getting first character?

I have numbers stored in a text field in my database:
ie.
321
322
401
402
403
404
405
406
I think you get the picture ;) Anyway I need to know how to get just the first character of each stored number and store it in the variable $season.
Any help much appreciated, thanks in advance,
