two insert?

Can i do like this?
$SQL = " INSERT INTO tbl1 ";
$SQL = $SQL . " (name,password)) VALUES ";
$SQL = $SQL . " ('$name', '$password')";
$SQL =$SQL . "INSERT INTO tbl2 ";
.......
$result = mysql_db_query($db,"$SQL",$connection);
I have a submit button in a form and i would like to insert username in
both tables at the same time. the above statement gave me an error.
