See if PHP has been compiled with MySQL support. Make a small
php-file containing
<?php phpinfo(); ?>
and see what is says in the block titled Configure Command.
For instance, mine says
'./configure' '--with-mysql' '--with-apxs' '--with-ldap'
'--with-mcrypt' '--include=/usr/include'
Ie. includes functions for mysql, apache, ldap and mcrypt.
