well, if you're using an array, you could use a for like this:
$row = mysql_fetch_row($result);
for( $i=0;$i<count($row);$i++ )
{
if( $i==0 )
$start_id = $row[$i];
elseif( $i == (count($row)-1) )
$end_id = $row[$i];
}
