PHP & MySQL Error Msg

I'm getting the following message
Warning: Offset 0 is invalid for MySQL result index 2
as the result of
$START = ($PAGE -1) * $DISPPAGE;
mysql_data_seek($QRETURN,$START);
for($i = 1; $i <= $DISPPAGE && $ARET = @mysql_fetch_array($QRETURN); $i++):
When I echo the values for each of the variables I get:
$ARET=Array $QRETURN=2 $QNUM=32 $START=0 $DISPPAGE=5 $PAGE=1
The script is designed to fill the array and display $DISPPAGE rows at a
time.
Any insights would be appreciated.
