zero in text fields

Hello,
Using mysql 3.22 solaris 2.6 binary with PHP:
I have a field in my database
slot text,
Whenever I attempt to store an integer zero (0) in that field it never gets saved, but all of other
characters and integers
do. It seems like text fields think zero is NULL, is that right? What gives?
