I honestly have to say that PHP was not written specifically for
this purpose, but short of finding a language or tool that is designed
specifically for this you probably can't do much better. Power and
stability are NOT going to be an issue on the PHP side. Your real concerns
on power and stability should be focused on your database, web server, and
the hardware platform that you are going to run this system on. In this
vein, I CAN make some definite recommendations...
Hardware platform is going to depend on many factors, but personal
experience and preference can guide you to some extent so long as you are
NOT considering Windows for the operating system. I would suggest your
flavor of choice for Linux, FreeBSD, or most any commercial Unix. These
operating systems are going to provide you with the power, flexibility and
stability that you are looking for. I would also recommend Apache for the
web server as this is pretty one of the most stable and powerful web servers
available today, stick with the 1.3 series for now though. The database is
another area of person preference, but my personal experience is with MySQL
and I find it works very well and will by far be the most cost effective in
terms of licensing.
So there you go... You will have a lot of decisions before you, and
there is really no "right" answer because you need to figure in your
personal experience and expertise. The only definite recommendation I can
make is to steer clear of Windows and IIS as these are both riddled with
security and stability issues. Further more, if you are planning to
purchase this system and not use existing equipment, going the Microsoft
route will be one of, if not the most, expensive paths you can tread.

Well I'm new to PHP period. My goal is to develop a web based inventory
system, and I going to have to try to do a new language to do this. I have
looked into php before a little. Now I am just wondering if PHP has the
power and stability to do what I'm looking to do?
Thanks,
Bryan
