dba_open() function

I'm trying to use the dba_open function to access a database using the GDBM handler. I get this
error:
Warning: driver initialization failed in
/data/domain/imawebdesigner.com/public_html/admin/dbm/do_it.php on line 8
That's different from when I try to use the db2 function set, which tells me the handler is
unknown.
Here's line 8 of my script:
if (dba_open("mydb", "c", "gdbm")) {
sendsucess(); }
else {
senderror(); }
