$res = mysql_query ("SELECT COUNT(deptid) FROM maintenance GROUP BY deptid"); $deptcount = array(); // reset the array while ($row = mysql_fetch_row ($res)) { $deptcount[] = $row[0];

this should be $deptcount[] .= $row[0]; shouldn't it?
