I have also tried to configure it with --with-mysql, it issues the same error, and i also looked for both files, and both ot them are there, also as a last resort i backed up the libphp4.so and tried to edit the line that says libmysqlclient.so.6 with /usr/local/mysql/...../libmysqlclient.so.6 it didnt complain about libmysqlclient.so.6 not found, but apache won't restart anyway.
